No question, I agree, David. I was just pointing out, I would like to have
the option but I certainly wouldn't want it to be the default.

I find "File Open," is still a useful option, it saves having to run with
Explorer and/or My Documents always open and saves a lot of time switching.
I don't think they've come up with a viable alternative that would allow
users to open another file from within an application, hence, this legacy
persists though I suppose you could just use the "run" box on the Start
menu.

I'm just pointing out that just because one person wants it doesn't mean
everyone does. And to design a thing like this requires decisions.
1. Apply one setting to all common dialogs - this is what it does now but
basically only sorting, show/hide hidden and similar settings. Only Sort is
a folder specific setting. These are the global defaults for all folders.
Sort is pretty much overridden by more specific settings everywhere but
Quick Launch and Open dialogs.
2. As above but dialog specific settings.
3. Use saved folder settings. This is a bad option.
4. Have another set of settings. More space, extra time to boot and
shutdown. More to go wrong, more questions to answer on why my saved dialog
settings don't work. Please NO.
But a point needs to be made. File Open dialogs (which is where this will
have most effect) shouldn't be used at all. We haven't been application
centred since before 95. In 3.1 we started to become Document centred and 95
continued it. In ME, before we had transitioned fully to documented centred
we started changing to Task Centred (Help & Support etc). So one should use
alternative methods to open files. By double clicking them. I believe MS
should have yanked file open dialogs (though not Save dialogs) to force
people to use Windows the way it was meant to be used.
But you still see the people who refuse to change. Like File Manager. They
think explorer is a file manager but it isn't one - it's a shell browser.
Anyway with LH user documents won't even be files.
