It seems you don't have a "server"; you have a Win2000
Professional Workstation pretending to be a server. This
is likely to cause some problems because it will not allow
you to maintain more than 10 concurrent connections.

About your "invisible" shares: I would look at these things:
- Are all machines, including the "server", in the same
  workgroup? What is its name?
- Did you turn off your internal firewalls during testing?
What about those integrated with your virus scanner?
- What do you get when you start a Command Prompt
on one of the workstations and issue this command:
  net use x: \\YourServer\YourShare
- Did you create one account for each student on your
  "server"?
- Did you set appropriate permissions for the share on
  your "server"?
- Did you set appropriate NTFS permissions for the
  share folder on your "server"?
