| Subject: Windows 2000 - Windows Explorer and IE Errors on Startup
| Date: Sun, 4 Jul 2004 06:49:32 -0700
| Background: Russell G. Zimmer Email:
| zimmer_russell@hotmail.com
| Dell Pentium III, T-450, Windows 2000, Service Pack 3.
| 2. Problems Encountered:
| 1. Problem with Windows Explorer - This happens every
| time I try to start Windows.
| Explorer.exe has generated errors and will be closed by
| Windows. You will need to restart the program.
| An error log is being created.
| Once the error log is created it restarts Windows, but
| Explorer is still not working. If you try to bring up
| Windows Explorer or Control Panel it starts the whole error
| process all over again.
| From Event Viewer
| Source Winlogon
| Event ID: 1002
| Description:
| The shell stopped unexpectedly and Explorer.exe was restarted.
| Steps taken to resolve the problem:
| 1. Ran Windows Update - Rebooted System
| 2. Ran Virus Scan with Norton Antivirus - No viruses detected
| 3. Downloaded and installed Windows 2000, Service Pack 4 -
| Rebooted System
| 4. Reinstalled Explorer.exe application after stopping the
| process - Rebooted System
| 5. Turned off Norton AV Real-time virus protection -
| Rebooted System
| All steps still yield the same results above. I am at wits
| end to come up with a fix.
| 2. Problems with Internet Explorer 6 SP1
| Every time I try to start IE6, it gives me the following:
| Microsoft Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and
| needs to close. We are sorry for the convenience. It then
| gives you choices to either Send Error Report or Don't Send
| Plus a check box to Restart Internet Explorer.
| I have to Send Error Report in order to get rid of the box
| and uncheck the restart.
| From Event Viewer:
| Source: Microsoft Internet
| EventID: 1000
| Descripiton:
| The description for EventID (1000) in Source (Microsoft
| Internet Explorer) cannot be found. The local computer may
| not have the necessary registry information or message DLL
| files to display messages from a remote computer. The
| following information is part of the event: iexplore.exe, 6
| .0.2800.1106, vx2.dll, 0.3.0.6, 0000eeea.
| Steps taken to resolve this problem:
| 1. Restarted it several times.
| 2. Downloaded IE6, SP1 and reloaded - Rebooted System
| Even with the reload, it still comes up with an error.
Hi Russell,
First, since there is no indication to a specific file that is corrupted we
must assume that
this is a DLL mismatch to IE 6 SP1.
This is caused by, strangely enough, Internet Explorer.
Since IE is now so integrated into the browser there is a specific DLL that
has not been correctly
registered in either Internet Explorer or Windows Explorer.
This is how we fix this.
