I just built a new AMD 2600+ based PC and have been having big problems
installing Windows 2000. The first time got an IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
bluescreen. Praying that it wasn't my RAM I formatted again and start a
fresh install. This time I got a PFN_LIST_CORRUPT bluescreen during
install. Microsoft's description of the error says it may be related to
bad RAM, so I swapped out my stick and started another fresh format/install.
This time it was a PAGE_FAULT_IN_NONPAGED_AREA bluescreen, so I swapped
out the video card and began a new format for the 4th time. This time
everything worked great, which makes me hypothesis it was the video card.
Is there any way to narrow down which piece of hardware is causing the
errors? I remember Maximum PC had an article about burning in your new
hardware to check for errors, but I can't find that article. What
utilities can I use to check for bad RAM, CPU cache, video RAM, hard
drive faults, etc.? Also, any thoughts on these different bluescreens?
They occured in similar spots, usually when setup was finalizing.
The original computer is:
AMD 2600+, A7N8X-X, GeForceFX 5500, WD 80GB HDD (JB series), 512MB
Kingston Value RAM, LG CD Burner.
Thanks,
Gary.
