W2K doesn't see external hard drive

I have an external hard drive with a USB connection. If I plug it into my
computer directly, it doesn't detect it. If I plug it into a USB hub and
the hub into my computer, my computer detects it. Anyone know why it's
working this way? I have all the Windows updates installed and have tried
plugging it into another W2K box with the same results. Thanks, Jimt
