ok, i checked the router and i checked the properties of the laptop and the
desktop. all are set to receive an IP address automatically via dhcp. i
sometimes take the laptop to work and the same thing happens there so i do
not think it is the router. is there anyway for the settings to change from
loading service packs or updates? i had enough of a headache in getting the
whole network to work that i try not to even think of the settings. meaning
that i did not change anything before this started acting up.

Are you using a DHCP server to the machine thay gave you that error? If
that machine's DHCP server is not under your control then make sure the
TCP\IP properties there are set receive an IP address automatically from a
DHCP server. Because that is where it is expecting to receive it's IP
address.
