a question as an answer is still an answer. now i know what you need.

internet access - cable modem

                                     : wireless desktop
                                    :
modem->wireless router->wired desktop
                                    \
                                     wired laptop

i have set all to dhcp. the laptop is not connected all the time but the
desktop is. the wireless connects via dhcp.

and this is what the event viewer had to say

Event Type: Warning
Event Source: Dhcp
Event Category: None
Event ID: 1003
Date: 5/1/2004
Time: 8:15:10 AM
User: N/A
Computer: KNELSON
Description:
Your computer was not able to renew its address from the network (from the
DHCP Server) for the Network Card with network address xxxxxxxxxxxx. The
following error occured:
The semaphore timeout period has expired. . Your computer will continue to
try and obtain an address on its own from the network address (DHCP) server.
Data:
0000: 79 00 00 00 y...

it started about 6-8 weeks ago when my wife said she could not get online.
before that, for the last year or so, it was as simple as turning on the
computer and clicking on the icon.
hope that is better. and remember, questions can still be answers

Yeah I saw this a little bit ago. Trouble is we know nothing about how you
retrieve your IP; nothing about how you get the IP to the other machines; we
do not know what your network topology is; we don't know if you have any
events in the Event Viewer on the machines that have to have their IPs
refreshed; basically here is what you said:

I have three machines. All talking to each other. One gets its IP fine.
The other two don't. Help.

It would be my first reaction to contact your ISP and see what they say
about it.
