I could not find a good KB article on this, but I believe that your original
profile is corrupted, such that Windows could not or would not load it. So,
it created a new one for you. If you have nothing to lose, and you can sign
on as an admin, you could edit the registry to point back to the old profile
/ username folder.

A rather nasty way to work around this would be to migrate data and settings
from the old username folder to the new one. Then rename the old one,
probably by adding an otherwise meaningless extension to the folder name,
like .bak or .old. Then, as administrator, rename the new username.computer
folder to username, and point the profile to the folder.

Have a look at "User Profile Storage in Windows 2000" at
<<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;228445>>
and "Winnt Extension Added to Profiles During Installation" at
<<http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;242258&Product=win
2000>>
