A further observation that may be of interest:

Yesterday, for unrelated reasons, I did a fresh install of Win 2000 on my
son's machine. His is an older model (PIII-800, BX chipset, SB live, ATI
Rage 128) which required no third party drivers other than for the Highpoint
raid controller and Linksys LAN card.

I installed Win 2000 (incl SP2), SP4, then did ALL updates via Windows
Update. The rest of his software loaded uneventfully. Zero problems yet
noted.

I'm not yet willing to do an experimental fresh install on one of my two
machines afflicted with KB835732 problems, but that might be an option (if
rather drastic). I am wondering, however, if removal of certain drivers and
software prior to application of KB835732, followed by their reinstallation
might work.
