I too am experiencing the sound problem after installing KB835732
(along with KB828741, KB837001, KB831167, and KB837009) yesterday on
my Win2k box. I haven't tried uninstalling KB835732 but judging by
all the vulnerabilities it's supposed to fix, it seems risky to
uninstall it. I'm pretty sure that these horrible worm/virus writers
will very likely take advantage of one of them within the next year.
I'm getting the PC speaker beep instead of the correct system event
sound that you describe. I'm running an old Asus A7V mobo w/1 ghz
T-Bird and an SB Live. I tried updating to the latest drivers I could
find on Creative's site (dated Feb 28 03!) instead of using what I
believe what were the drivers that Win2k came with. It didn't help.
