lost profile

A user profile was overwritten on a 2K box. Now, all of "my documents" is missing, along w/ browser favorites etc. its not in ANY of the profile folders, and when I do a search, nothing comes up. Short of 3rd party uitility, is there a way to recover the "deleted" data?
Someone wrote that it was answered in Win2000 file system, but I can't find it.
