Try going into the advanced permissions for that group and apply it to
"files only" or This folder and file only"

I've never used the Creator/Owner group for folder permissions. That
assume the creator has write access first. Otherwise how can you be
the creator of a file if you don't have write access in that folder?

you might be better of creating two folders under your shares root.
One for sharing files for read only, the 2nd for users to have their
own subfolders. Then each user could have full control to their own
files and others could read them but not delete them.
