Hello,
We've been trying to enable DFS on our network so that users will have
uninterupted access to their H: network share (userdata) at all times
incase of an outage or maintenance on the primary server that stores
the data.
Our network is comprised of two servers which are both running the
latest updates/service packs/patches for Windows 2000 Advanced Server.
Both servers have identical hardware specifications as well and have
sufficient storage capacity to allow for replication of the H: data.
Both servers are also domain controllers.
What we want to have done is we want the data stored on SVR01, which
is the current host of the H: shares for the users on our network, to
replicate that data onto the second server, SVR02. And then what we
would do is change out batch files so that users would connect to
\\domain.com\UserData\$name intead of \\SVR01\UserData\$name. This way
in case SVR01 is taken offline, they will revert to the identical data
stored on SVR02.
We ran several tests on these two servers using a few files which
worked great. However, as soon as we configured DFS to use the
existing UserData share, it suddenly denied access to users currently
connected onto the network and presenting them with a message saying
"insufficient storage to service the request." Not only did this
prevent network users from accessing their H: shares which were still
set as \\SVR01\UserData\$name, but it also prevented them from
accessing other shares on that same server. In order to fix this, we
disabled DFS on SVR01 and SVR02 and rebooted both servers. Following
that, the users could resume connection with their
\\SVR01\UserData\$name shares.
If anyone has any insight as to what we should be doing, I'd
apprecaite it.
I can be emailed at shahrum(at)iosweb(dot)com. I will be checking back
on this thread however. Thank you.
