Hi chris,
When i did a nslookup on the ip addresses they were root server addresses.
We were getting a lot of spam so it could have been cuased from invalid
characters in the address so when our server could not resolve this issue it
was trying to resolve names using the root server addresses which could not
also.
I am probably wrong on this but anyway i have since got our spam filter
working correctly and have no longer got these dns errors.
thanks - lisa
