I have a customer who is running some software we wrote - several
separate interacting executables. Basically the main machine sits
there and is periodically sent great dollops of data from other
machines which it analyses and stores. The main machine runs 24/7,
often unattended. Another machine on a remote site runs other software
(the "Console") which essentially displays views of data on the main
machine.
Sometimes, when multiple sites start downloading at the same time, the
main machine suffers extreme overload. The customer perceives this as
a very slow UI on the Console and as the data displayed being out of
date (because a big backlog of data for processing builds up).
Now, we are not 100% sure of what is causing this, although we have a
few ideas. We need to be able to see which modules are soaking up the
resources at overload time, so that we can home in on the problem and
also so we can see how much effect any remedial action we take has.
Very occasionally I am at the main machine when an overload happens
and I can run Task Manager and get an idea of what is going on. But
that is rare, and the only record I have after the event is from any
notes I take.
What I really need is something which can present the same data as
Task Manager's Process tab, but historically, perhaps days after the
event, in a tabular or graphic form. Whatever is presented must be
split down by process; overall system figures are useless. Ideally it
should be possible to filter by process name, as otherwise it would be
something of a "needle in a haystack" exercise.
Can anyone point me in the direction of a suitable tool. The main
machine is running Windows 2000 Server.
TIA
Liam
