Just an additional note for folks experiencing the same or similar problems.
Poking around my HDD using MS Explorer I noticed that whenever I tried to
access a file or directory possessing an exceedingly long name I could get
explorer.exe to crash every time. I shortened or deleted these items, many
of which were web pages saved via IE. Pages saved in html format sometimes
have ridiculously long default file/dir names. If you rename these items
later you lose the link between the page and associated images, etc. I now
opt to save pages in mht archive format (using a short file name) which
allows me to rename this single file later if needed. Since I have adopted
these practices I have had far fewer errors.
