ACL Picker Not displaying Users or Security Groups - Folders and Files Have no Owner.

Dear Group,
Can I trouble you please to hear my situation as I'm dealing with an
idiot server administrator and I need to prove him wrong once in a
while just to shut him up. Let me tell you the scenario. If I'm
wrong then I'll just shutup.
One day this past week several of the users complained of not having
access to files that they normally had. I logged onto the server with
the share and noticed that the nested share underneigth it was in
error. Not a single user or security group acl was displayed in the
security picker nor the permissions picker (from the special
permissions via the advanced button). The owner of the folder/files
displayed only that it couldn't display the owner of the folder/files.
We took ownership of the folder and the security picker displayed the
users and groups who should have the access. While I admitted to not
being totally sure what caused the problem, I suggested that perhaps
one of the techs changed permissions and killed the process before it
was done. (This structure contained hundreds of directories and
thousands of files and takes a while for the permissions to update).
The tech may have been impatient and killed the process before it
completed or maybe it just glitched before it finished. Nothing in
the event logs to suggest anything went wrong.
This other *** said that someone with full control of the share or
folder, but not the files tried to take ownership of the files and
this caused the acl to be in error. I asked him how this could happen
because if you don't have full control, you can't take ownership.
Windows usually doesn't respond by screwing up but rather by telling
you that you don't have the rights to take ownership. He said that he
saw this before and that's how he knew. I recreated the scenario on
the very same server and couldn't get the problem to recreate.
Has anybody heard of this before? Any comments would be appreciated.
