cdonts configuration

i'm trying to get cdonts to work. it's just not going. my asp pages report
the email being sent, but nothing ever goes out. i'm guessing the smtp
server needs to be configured, and i played with it for a bit, but for the
life of me i can't figure out what it is i'm missing. a little help?
