I am in the process of working on a disaster recovery project and we are
trying to parallel the current environment. I created a system state and
sys
vol backup on the domain controller and copied to newly built windows 2000
server sp4. After restoring sysvol and system state the server hangs on
boot
and does the same with safe mode. Tried to do a repair install and keep
getting error: An error has been encountered that prevents setup from
continuing. Setup failed to install the product catalogs. This is a
fatal
error. This occurs in the gui part of the repair.
IF neither Safe Mode nor Repair Install (which has
practically always worked for me) doesn't work
you may have too great a hardware difference to make
this move.
Maybe someone has another idea. Were it a Win2003
Server I would have suggested trying an (initial) ASR
backup followed by its recovery procecss instead of
the Repair Install (ASR boots the repair from the original
CD and essentially does a new/repair install to get you
onto new hardware with the old System State.)
Keep us informed, as I am very interested in both trying to
help and hearing what does and does not work for you.
