I am trying to replace my current domain controller with a brand new
computer. I've tried many methods of transfering the data over to the new
one and all seem to fail. Here is list of attempts and reasons for
failure.

Firstly tried to dcpromo and transfer fsmo roles. This failed because a
merchant porgram we used didn't work after removing the old dc from the
network.

Then I tried to backup the old one and restore it on the new one. That
resulted in the new server not loading windows. (backup of system state
and
drive c)

The user accounts seem to work fine when using the new server after
dcpromo
but I can't demote the old server without having something to repair it to
normal if the new one fails. I think this could be the problem I have
with
my merchant program. Any ideas would be helpful.
