I'm not sure why the LinkID exists, if you check the Exchange Setup log file
what dose it say? dose it ever give you the duplicated link ID?

You may have prepared the schema before for exchange 2003?

You can run the follow command:
dsquery * cn=schema,cn=configuration,<ForestRootDN> -scope onelevel -filter
"(&(objectcategory=attributeSchema)(linkid=*))" -attr cn linkID

To display all linked attributes in AD and the LinkIDs
