With regards to the browse list being empty on the local subnet however, I
would check the following:
- Is NetBIOS over TCP/IP (NetBT) disabled? You disable this on the WINS
tab of TCP/IP properties. As Matjaz has already stated, no NetBT - no
Browse list
- Is the Computer Browser service running and set to automatic? If not, it
should be. However, this still requires NetBT.
- Is the NetBIOS TCP/IP Helper Service running and set to automatic?
Again, this should be.
If all of this is true, perhaps all of the machines have had their ability
to act as a browse master disabled - this is achieved through editing the
registry.
In order for the browse list to span multiple subnets, you must ensure that
name resolution is working correctly. Ideally, you'll have WINS, but I
believe you can achieve this without WINS...
