Jon,

I think that this might be better asked in the Exchange Admin NewsGroup.
However, we might be able to help you here. Did you delete a user account
along with the mailbox or something similar? I am assuming that you have
run the Exchange Cleanup Agent against the Information Store where this
mailbox resided if my guess is correct. The new user account that you
created - you did not create a mail-enabled user account, correct? If you
did then you will need to delete that user account and create it again, only
this time uncheck the 'create...mailbox' checkbox. Then go run the Exchange
Cleanup Agent again and this user account will be one of the possible user
accounts to which you can reconnect this mailbox.

However, you have provided very little information so my response may not be
on target......
