RE: VS2008Pro - Install Failure

Hi guys,
I found the problem on my maschine:
I changed the path for default program-files directory from "C:\Programme"
(German version of "C:\Program Files") to drive E:\.
Hence I changed value in windows registry
"HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ProgramFilesDir" from
"C:\Programme" to "E:\".
But, VS 2008 setup wanted to install the Web Designer Tools into default
directory (%ProgramFiles%) + "\Microsoft Web Designer Tools". It created
string for installation directory "E:\\Microsoft Web Designer Tools" (with 2
backslashes!) which was incorrect.
To fix the error, I corrected the value from "E:\" to "E:", reboot and
installation was working properly :-)

Hi guys,.
I have exactly the same problem with "Visual Studio 2008 Professional
Edition (Englisch)"-DVD togethter with German Windows XP SP2:
Installation of "Microsoft Visual Studio Web Authoring Component" fails
together with a list of not installed components.
Furthermore log-file contains:
"Setup Failed; MSIInstallProduct return value either ERROR_INSTALL_FAILURE
or default."
Any news to work arround this bug???

Andreas

I am having the same problem on Vista Business as well as XP. I have tried
turning off Windows Update and anti-virus; log in as Admin; no betas ever
installed; quit other programs; etc etc. Over and over again. The install
fails as you describe.
This is extremely aggravating as I have spent abour 4 hours messing with
this (including searching for answers online). Others are reporting this
problem on the Web and not getting any solution, just bromides ("log in as
Admin," "be sure your system is up to date" etc blah blah).
I can't believe Microsoft would make it this hard to install a major
product, and let the process fail so ungracefully. I think DreamSpark will
give thousands of students a good lesson on what's wrong with Microsoft.

I've now tried to install VS2008-Pro. WinXP-SP2+all updates. VS2005+SPs &\
updates. Before I read readme and removed SQL. After the first two failures
(removing all remnants and tem files) and re-reading the readme after each
attempt, I still get what appears to the same point. The error message is
non-commital. The installation panel shows "The following component *failed*
to install:"
Microsoft VisualStudio Web Authoring Component"
and then lists all of the (other) remaining VS2008 components which has not
installed - which was more or less the same as the original list.

Any suggestions of what needs to be done so I can get SV2008Pro installed?
