Hi Dave,
As far as I can see, this guideline is not a requirement. Yes, linking file
is the share function you're using.
The purpose of this guideline is to make your physical structure and
logical view of the files more similar. It will give you advantages in
management of the database. You won't get into any trouble if you're using
the share function. The guideline is just a recommendation.
If anything is unclear, please feel free to let me know.
