This happened to us, too many times in the past - having our developers admin rights to our dev box:

Our scenario: Our anonymous user id in IIS is a network account
Somebody replace it with a user id of a developer instead of a generic user account just for anonymous logon
Our developer accounts have administrator rights
When connecting anonymously to the site, it defaulted to use that developers account
thus automatically using that account for anyone who connects to the site and server did not ask to validate any user logins
--> so in turn any previous check outs you may have does not reflect a check out graphic because the system sees you as a different person.

ALSO, it could happen that somebody may have reset the VSS on the website, thus loosing any previous check outs.
