VS2008 hangs when building and I right click for Intellisense

VS2008 hangs when building and I right click for Intellisense. It
appears to be a standard dance of interleaved mutex death. The
compiler stops building and the IDE turns all white. I have to kill
VStudio to recover.

Also, Intellisense takes several hours of 50%+ CPU power to rebuild
after a full source code rebuild. It makes developing nearly
impossible for several hours after performing a full rebuild.
