Re: Visual Studio 2005 on Vista

But you forget the fundamentals: A system that is working is better that
one which isn't.

I haven't forgotten anything. I have Vista on my home computer, with SQL
Server 2005, Visual Studio 2005, Visual Studio 2003, a host of other
software, and I have easily migrated my SQL Server 2000 databases to the new
system. Everything works. Zero errors.

Is Vista really new?, apart from the cosmetics. It uses the same file
system
as XP. Longhorn was chucked out.

Apart from the cosmetics, the other 99% of it is a complete rewrite. I could
care less about the cosmetics. I am a programmer. Like a mechanic, I don't
care what the body looks like. After poking around under the hood, I have
found Vista to be a tremendously powerful programming platform. Took a
little getting used to, but that's life in the fast lane.

Still, a man convinced against his will is of the same opinion still. If you
are determined to believe what you believe, regardless of the facts, you're
welcome to. However, that will not make you successful in your endeavors.
Maybe it's my old military training, but I prefer to suck it up and drive
on.

Microsoft have a vested interest in building obsolescence into their
software.

It's called an "upgrade." I have successfully migrated SQL Server 2000
databases to SQL Server 2005 without any issues whatsoever, and this is
the
norm. It's called "backwards compatibility."

All software is upgraded with successive versions. Microsoft is not an
exception to the rule. They are the same as every other software vendor
in
this regard.

The fact that the SQL Server 2000 software is not supported on Vista
after 6
years is not surprising, if you know anything about operating systems and
the history of software. All MS operating systems since Windows 2000 have
been built on the NT model. Vista is a complete rewrite, which makes
sense
after using the same basic Kernel for about 15 years. Hardware and
hardware
capabilities, as well as the evolution of networking have necessitated
this.
In other words, the length of time for which support for a particular
software package on a particular platform is, like any other measure of
time, relative. To make a statement like the above without a relative
frame
of reference is to be completely arbitrary.

Obsolescence is not the exception in this industry, but the rule, and it
is
not dictated by software vendors, but by the nature of the technology. By
the measure expressed in the above message, ALL software vendors "have a
vested interest in building obsolescence into their software."
