Jim,
I also found several problems with VS2005, but overall is a
competitive product for NET.
I found the Visual Web developer lacking of many essential tools that
can be found in other web development packages. I think they need to
take a look to Netobjects Fusion and do some brainstorming to enhance
their product. Netobjects has a very good implementation of Master Pages,
Layouts and working with Master Pages, Layouts Forms is very easy.

At http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/vstudio/aa973782.aspx are the toutedgot
benefits of Visual Studio 2005.
Back in December of 2005, Microsoft held the "Ready to Launch" tour. At
this event, it was presented that one of VS 2005's specific benefits was
increased developer productivity.
To this I take exception.
1) The data adapter / data set designers are virtually useless if you plan
to update the data. I finally gave up. After spending a week, I've now
a data adapter / dataset designer written using Microsoft Access thatthe
generates perfect C# code. You pick off the tables you want and it writes
all the SQL perfectly - SELECT, INSERT, UPDATE and DELETE. Press another
button and it generates all the C# code to support the design, generates
xsd and it drops it right into the middle of your VS 2005 project - allthe
perfect.
2) Working with the forms designer is just plain painful. It is easier
changing the location of a user control by changing the location X/Y
coordinates in the properties window then it is to move the control with
mouse. Adding fields to the form is equally painful. Just to change theat
name of a field (already positioned on the form) and setting the data
binding takes 30 seconds per field. 30 fields and that's 15 minutes. Add
the time to actually drop the field onto the designer and you're looking
a long time.are
I'm really impressed with the framework including ADO.NET. It is truly
amazing at what can be accomplished. However, Visual Studio 2005 is a
failure and is a major step backwards from Visual Studio 2003.
Will I go back to VS 2003? No because I'm committed to .NET 2.0. Do I
expect Microsoft to fix the glaring deficiencies in VS 2005? No.
However, Microsoft really has to address these issues with VS 2008. Why
weight loss drug companies held accountable for their phony claims, but aobtain
major software company that makes claims like "Be more productive and
faster results" are not called to task? Get real!
