long is 64 bits?

We just recently converted our projects from VS 6 C++ to VS 7 which I think
is also called VS .NET. That went pretty smoothly except for some new
compiler warnings we had to work out.

Now I'm reading a book on VS 2005 (which we don't have yet) and it says a
long is now 64 bits? Is the book right? It was 32 bits in VS 6 and I
believe VS 7 too. If a long is now 64 bits, when did that happen? VS 2003
or VS 2005?

Please feel free to direct me to a better group if appropriate.

Thanks for your help.
Bruce.
