Hi,
Q: Is it possible to instal VS 2005 on Windows 2000 Server?
(The "Server" is important part of the question.)
Details: For some reasons I use the Windows 2000 Server
as a development environment. I am using simultaneously
VS 6 and VS 2003 now. Occasionally, I have installed
and uninstalled MS SQL Server 2000. The result is that
versions of MDAC from 2.5 through 2.6, 2.7, 2.8 are
installed. The VS 2005 tries to install the MDAC 2.8 SP 1
which fails with "INF Install failure. Reason: Access is denied."
I did log-in as the member of Administrators group, but
also as a local administrator or the administrator of the domain.
No difference. I tried Microsoft's troubleshooting guide
and also the older guide for version 2.6 (used listdlls utility
to ensure that no process uses mdac dll's... etc.)
I was unsuccessfull to rollback to earlier version.
The ComponentChecker says that the current version
cannot be identified (like "more versions in use").
I did fall to regedit and tried my best. I have failed.
I have discovered that the Windows 2000 Server
uses the recovery mechanism (when I manually remove
the dll's they will appear again). I thought that it was
a new feature in Win XP... Could you give me some
hint what else should I try?
Thanks,
Petr
P.S. We have a proverb like "More heads, more wisdom."
I rely on that. (My head does not count ;)
