I'm in that situation (I'm a professor) and chose Professional because I
have to keep generating .msi files and deployment projects in order to
continue work I'm already doing. Standard generates only a simpler kind of
deployment project.
Apart from that, Standard at $50 looks good. But it was painful paying full
price for Professional...

Thanks for the info. I have determined that my skills are well beyond the
express editions of VS2005 and my student store is offering only the
standard
and professional editions of the software. The only reason wh I got
VS2003
Pro was because it was such a great deal from my student store and now I
have
grown accustomed to the layout and features where downgrading is now not
an
option. Thanks again.

Hi Matt,

Furthermore, a quick look at Amazon
(http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/detail/-/B000BTA4LU/sr=1-1/qid=1139271308/ref=pd_bbs_1/002-2399914-9488018?%5Fencoding=UTF8&v=glance
) shows the regular retail price of VS 2005 Pro to be about $800, on
sale
for $702. Microsoft's list of academic discounts,
http://download.microsoft.com/download/2/7/7/277d9f67-955e-4703-9453-bbfce1efbdd7/AEFPP_USERP.xls
doesn't show any 2005 products although that doesn't mean they aren't
available at academic prices.
My take on all of this is that ultimately Microsoft thinks the Express
products are enough for student purposes and people who work on a
"professional" level, like you, have professional-level incomes and can
afford the full license.

I am a student and I have been using a copy of Visual Studio.NET 2003
Pro
for
a while now. I was able to purchase it for the student price of $99.00
US.
I
am now interested in buying the new Visual Studio 2005 and I am faced
with
a
problem. The student discount for Visual Studio 2005 Pro is far less
than
it
was for 2003. It is $749.95 US but the Standard Edition is only $49.95
US.
What I am interested to know is if buying the Standard Edition will be
enough
for me having been using the Pro edition of the previous version. I use
VB,
C#, C++ and I do both desktop and mobile device programming. I do use a
bunch
of the pro features including XML and XML Schema. Does the standard
version
include a full set of Windows Forms controls? Will I lose any
functionality
with going to Standard Edition? I have been told that the Standard
edition
of
VS2005 is like the Pro edition of VS2003. Is this true? Thanks in
advance
for all your advice.
