I am also beginning to learn VS2005. I have been doing some coding with the
Visual Web Developer.
The drag and drop is a common feature that you can find in most web
authoring programs today.
The interface is very similar the Visual Interdev 6.0 and appears to have
inherited a lot from it including the
Solution Explorer, Server Explorer ( formerlyDataView), the Query Designer,
Database Designer.
I use Visual Interdev 6.0 for ASP and the interface ( by the time it was
released) has many more features than
Visual Web Developer.
In VWD, the Design Time Controls are now NET controls, Server Objects are
now replaced with the .NET server objects, etc.
The functionality is very similar also in the rest (Grids, etc). However
some very useful components have vanished, for
example the Form Manager.
To create a form you must actually enter the form tag in the page which is
very annoying.
I have been using other WYSIWIG programs and it seems to me that there is a
lot room for improvement particulary
regarding masterpages, layouts, forms creation an many other items which are
still in its infancy.
My conclussion is that it provides the fundamentals tools to create a
website using ASP.NET.
I see it as a deprecated version of Visual Interdev adapted to work with
ASP.NET.
However, there is a better Web Development from MS. the program is MSt Web
Expression
You can get if for about 200 u$s. That is the same price as Visual Studio
2005 Standard
which includes the Visual Web Developer, so it is logical to think that it
is a better app for web development.
