Well, looks like you are not very experienced user, aren't you?
1. I do not see a single reason why you had to buy a new hard drive (if you
could have access to the same hard drive later - then you didn't need new
hard drive for any other possible reason too). Non-working OS is not the
reason, just format the hard drive and reinstall the OS - that's it. So SP2
did not forced you to do useless things, it's your lack of knowledge that did.
2. Windows Firewall can be completely stopped by stopping it's service (but
you probably don't even know what the Windows service is). Also, before
upgrading you should have updated your firewall and antivirus to
SP2-compatible version.
3. SP2 does not change permissions for any registry keys,
4. The reason for sudden OS hang and refuse to boot is some old incompatible
driver (that you should have updated before installing) or most likely some
virus or adware program.
5. You cannot repair one Windows version from the CD of another - this is
quite obvious. And yes, service packs are quite a new versions of Windows
(the number of changes in XP SP2 is *HUGE*!), so it will not work too.
And just a hint for the future: clean installation (after hard drive
reformatting) of OS and all applications solves more then 80% of all computer
related problems. Don't forget about compatible drivers and up-to-date
antivirus and firewall.
I installed SP2 on several machines with large number of applications and
devices and everything went smooth. However clean installation is even better
(search the web on how to integrate SP2 into your installation CD, burn the
new SP2 CD and then make a *clean* install from it).
