I'm sorry but SP2 in it's current state is deeply flawed. I actually lost
the functionality of my XP pro operating system and was forced to buy a new
hard-drive and re-install all my software. Fortunately I was still able to
access the data from my old drive but the operating system can not be
recovered.

Here is the short version of my disaster, which probably sucked 30
productive hours out of my life as well as considerable cost.

I installed SP 2 but lost network connectivity as a result, even after
disabling their wonderful firewall. I uninstalled it therefore, but could
not get my network working again so I (mistakingly) assumed it wasn't the
fault of SP 2 and attempted to re-install SP 2. The re-install failed
because SP 2 had altered the premissions in the registry so that it no longer
had access to key registry entries. I restored the permissions and seemingly
got a working SP-2 system.

Curious about the new features of SP 2 I started browsing my control panel.
I clicked on the entry for digital cameras when my system froze. Not even
the task manager would launch, so i forced a hardware reboot. During reboot
the system hung after the Windows XP splash screeen, shortly before the
display of the user log in. This state could not be recovered from and was
duplicated even in safe mode reboot.

I did manage to reboot into console mode and then launched the uninstall
script batch file. It failed due, once again to registry permission issues.
My last resort was a repair re-install of windows SP-1 from the original CD.
To my surprise this failed as well ! Moreover it failed fairly close to the
end of the install after it had written a lot of stuff to the disk. I now
had a wonderful mix of SP-1 and SP-2 on my machine with no working OS.

Once I had a clean new harddrive and had ripped out the corrupted old
harddrive, (I put it in another computer on the network so I could still
access the data), my XP pro SP-1 CD worked flawlessly, disproving the
theory that the CD was corrupted.

I doubt I will ever risk installing SP-2 on any of my XP machines again. I
will consider it for new machines, but not until all the bug fixes are in.
