Help! Excel UsedRange in VSTO changes when formatting cells.

I am knew to this whole VSTO thing and C# as well but the problem I am
having is actually with Excel. The UsedRange property from the Excel
object keeps assuming that when I format a cell with colors, that it is
used. It is NOT used. I want to have alternating colors on each row
without Excel thinking that it's used. Any ideas? I can't submit all
these unused rows because it's a time consumer!
