Finally I think I've solved the problem I've been having.

Every night I have a task that runs to defragment the hard disk, before
defragmenting it deletes all the .BAK files on the hard disk.

I found that I had the problem at the start of each day, but not during the
day even if I restarted the computer etc.

The following file was deleted:
C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application
Data\Microsoft\Office\Data\DATA.BAK

I found that if the file is present Visual Studio.Net loads perfectly, but
if the file is missing (I've since renamed the file to prove this) I get the
problem described below.
