As for the "connect to Server" operation, do you mean the "server
explorer"
window in visual studio IDE?

If so, the "server explorer" is mainly used for conveniently manage/view
some database instances in visual studio, also include some other windows
server components(such as eventlog, performance counters...).

As for the "downloading code" feature, do you mean the source code
control(like VSS)? If this is what you want, you can have a look at the
source control support features of Visual Studio IDE. Currenty for VS
2008,
team system/TFS is the most powerful and recommended one. You can also
use
VS with other source control tools like Visual Source Safe(or other 3rd
party tools):
