Hi Schneider,
As for the visual studio's database server explorer, SQL Server is the most
well integrated one as the development of the two product are in close
lifecycle so that visual studio can choose the best provider. However, for
oracle, visual studio generally use the OLD DB provider which is for Oracle
7, and support of most general funcctionalitis in latest version of Oracle.
Therefore, there does exists quite many features of new Oracle versions
that are not fully utilized via server explorer. The following MSDN
reference has also mentioned many information about the visual studio
designer tools support for orable databases(also mentioned something about
the database object's naming convention requirement...):
#Server Explorer for Oracle Databases
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa290286(VS.71).aspx
#General Considerations for Using Visual Database Tools with Oracle
Databases
http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa290250(VS.71).aspx
In addition, I've found the following Orable deverloper tools for visual
studio from oracle site, that is declared to support the lastest Oracle
features and integrated with all the visual studio versions. You may have a
look:
#Oracle Developer Tools for Visual Studio
http://www.oracle.com/technology/tech/dotnet/tools/index.html
Hope this helps.
Sincerely,
Steven Cheng

Hello,
Just curious; Does anyone really use this for databases?
I have used it for Sql Server some, create tables, Database diagrams (love
this), a lot of the cool stuff does not work with other providers.
There seems to be issues when using Oracle:
1. Unable to see objects which should visible by synonyms & schemas:
Yes they are listed in the synonyms node, but has no details, unless you
name things good, you can't even determine the object type.
The functionality for databases seems very limited to me...
I have been using PLSQL Developer for Oracle, and MS SQL Management Studio
for Sql Server.
I would like one tool which works well with all provides (or at lease Sql
Server & Oracle), don't think I have ever seen one, and the VS Server
Explorer does not even come close.
Thanks,
Schneider
