Hello JF,
Welcome to Microsoft Newsgroup Service. I am Hongye Sun [MSFT] and it is my
pleasure to work with you on this issue.
I understand your tough situation because the issue is commonly asked and
it is caused by a known issue. The problem is that MSDN version you have
originally installed pre-fills the key field with a workgroup product key
and make them read only. Product group will fix it in the next version. In
the current stage, we have three workarounds:
1. Install from Media
I know that you have already tried the attempt. I want to confirm that you
were installing it from the new (standard version) media. In our test, we
run setup from standard media with Workgroup Edition already installed. The
PID fields will have two situations:
1) Empty (for Retail Edition)
2) Pre-filled by Volume License key (for Volume License Edition)
Both of the situations lead to a successful upgrade.
Note: please check if the pre-filled PID is the new one.
2. Clear the Original Product Key
This workaround should only be used if the #1 does not work for you,
because the #1 option is suggested by product group.
The method is first clear the original product key in your local disk.
After that, the PID fields should be empty and editable when you do a
repair again.
To clear the Product Key, please do:
Open file at <DISK>:\Program Files\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team
Foundation Server\Microsoft Visual Studio 2008 Team Foundation Server -
ENU\Setup.stb in notepad.exe. (backup up the file first)
Search for "Product Key", you will see text like following:
-----------------------------------
[Product Key]
xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
-----------------------------------
Remove the two lines of text.
Save it and re-run repair from control panel.
This time you should be able to edit the product key.
3. Uninstall the original TFS and re-install new one
If both workarounds above do not work for you, this is the final workaround
to this issue.
This method should be working for all situations. Your data will not be
lost after un-installation.
My suggestion is to do the #1 and #2 first before trying this method.
Please feel free to contact me if you have anything unclear. I would be
more than happy to help.
BTW: I noticed that this issue is very urgent to you. Newsgroup may not be
the most suitable place for very urgent issue. The correct way to process
urgent issue is to submit a support request for professional service. Here

Have a great day!

up response may take approximately 2 business days as the support
professional working with you may need further investigation to reach the
most efficient resolution. The offering is not appropriate for situations
that require urgent, real-time or phone-based interactions. Issues of this
