RE: (VSTS:LDD) Import IIS Settings Wizard - Unable to connect! Workaround?

Tech-Archive recommends: Fix windows errors by optimizing your registry

Hello Sabrina,

Welcome to Microsoft Newsgroup Service. My name is Hongye Sun [MSFT]. It's
my pleasure to work with you on this issue.

In order to better understand your questions, would you please answer some
questions for me?

Our production servers are hosted by a 3rd party, and are behind a
firewall.
Question 1: Does this statement mean that we could not change settings in
the production server, the settings includes:
1. Add your account as local administrator in that server.
2. Add program as exceptions in windows firewall.

For this reason, when I'm trying to create my Logical Datacenter Diagram
in
Visual Studio 2008 and I want to import the true IIS settings from our
production servers, they fail. (System Event Log reads: DCOM was unable
to
communicate with the computer devserver using any of the configured
protocols.)
Question 2: Do you use Import IIS Settings Wizard? It fails at what stage
of the wizard? What is the UI error message?

Short of opening up port 135 to incoming traffic, which is
undesirable, I don't know of any other way to import those settings.
Question 3: Do you mean that it is undesirable to add port 135 as
exception in windows firewall? If we just add inetinfo.exe as an exception
instead of port 135, is it acceptable?

I have
access to IIS on that site, from which I can grab a copy of the
Metabase.xml
file, which in the end is exactly what Visual Studio is reading those
settings from.
Question 4: How do you grab a copy of the Metabase.xml? Using IIS manager?

Question 5: What's the OS of the server and client? What is the IIS version?

I also provide a general solution to the issue here:
=== POSSIBLE SOLUTION ===
1. Check that the credentials you provide have administrator access to the
IIS Web server or that they have appropriate rights to the IIS Metabase
sections in the registry. You can provide the latter access by using the
Metabase Editor that is included in the IIS Resource Kit. If you are
attempting to import settings from a server that is running Windows Vista,
you need membership in the IIS_IUSRS group as well as administrator
credentials on that server.

2. If the IIS Web server you are trying to access is running on Windows XP
SP2 or Windows Server 2003 SP1, the Windows firewall can block settings
import and result in this error message. To work around this, add
inetinfo.exe to the list of exceptions in Windows Firewall using the
following procedure.
Type the following at the command line of the IIS server:
%SystemRoot%\system32\inetsrv\inetinfo.exe Inetinfo ENABLE.
- Or-
Do the following through the user interface:
Open Control Panel.
Open Windows Firewall.
Click Add Program on the Exceptions tab.
Browse to locate inetinfo.exe.
Click OK.
After you have done this on the remote machine, both IIS import and IIS
administration work correctly.

waiting for your reply. Have a great day!
