Hi Kevin,
Both Windows XP Pro and Windows Server 2003 is fine for your development work. It just depends on your requirements.
If you're working on a desktop app or some small website, Windows XP will meet the requirements for testing.
However, if your app is a service or some big website project, which requires IIS6, you will need to use Windows Server 2003 as the dev machine.
I strongly disagree. A server should NEVER, NEVER, NEVER be used as a development machine. I could probably write a book on "why", but I can't even believe anyone is suggesting it in the first place. It goes against every principal of best-practices enterprise computing.
It's silly that you can even install something like VS2005 on a server, but it's hardly surprising when you look at the bigger picture of Microsoft. They put things like "Outlook express" and "Media Player" client apps on PRODUCTION servers too (!), not to mention "Internet Explorer" with all it's security holes (even in safe mode!).
