visual studio start page problems

hi.
please respond. noone has ever responded to me on these boards, and i am
getting very frustrated. PLEASE respond.
i have two problems, and both may be for the same reason.
1. my start page shows three tabs: "Projects", "Online Resources" and "My
Profile". why can't i see the start page that the MCAD books show? the one in
the books has a left-side navigation menu with all kinds of options, and i
want to be able to use them the way my book says thay can be used.
2. when i select the "Online Resources" tab i get a page that displays an
error: "This feature requires that you have connected to the
internetpreviously or are online." well, i am connected to the web and am
online, yet i get this message.
what's wrong with this thing? how do i fix it?
