Bingo!
Good call Zach.
I pinned the problem on Arcsoft Audio Decoder version 1.3.1.63
With that decoder disabled in the Movie Maker, I can now play mp3s on the MM
timeline and also in the DVDmaker preview. Using MM I published a video using
the same mp3 audio file from the other tests and the published result played
on WMP11. I tried another mp3 audio file just to be sure. It worked, too. I
didn’t burn a slide show with the same mp3’s but I’m sure that since they
play in the preview mode in DVDmaker they’ll publish/burn correctly.
Thanks very much for your patience and work. A good learning experience for
me.
You are the man…

What happens if you use Movie Maker's Tools:Options:Compatibility menu tool
to disable ALL of the many non-Microsoft MPEG filters you have installed?
I'd strongly suspect it's one of those getting in the way here.

Hey Zach,
I admire your tenacity and appreciate your work.
Here's what I found out for you:
"Does the file play originally in WMP with sonud?"
answer: Yes. Originally ripped in WMP, too
"Do you have have the updated RealTek sound card driver?"
answer: Yes
"#5: right, WMP doesn't fix problems like this that way."
Answer: OK. I didn't know if WMP shares codecs with WMM and /or DVDmaker
"And -- does this happen on other systems? I've never had problems with
MP3
files, so I'm curious as to if this is a problem on the file side (unique
bad file)."
Answer: no problem playing mp3s on WMP11 Vista mp3s. To be sure, I'm using
only mp3s in this test that will play on this Vaio laptop and 2 other XP
computers over the Home Network or transferred from Vaio to both XP
computers
via memory stick. The mp3 audio file is good.
"or on the codec side (something overriding the default codecs
here)."
Answer: I uninstalled GOM in case its codecs or "files" are interfering
with
MM codecs or files. Then I performed same test in MM. Nope. Mp3 audio file
won't sound in MM or it's published output won't sound in WMP
#6: All of it - I don't want to accidentally miss anything.

HI Zach,
I'm using wma files with MM and DVDmaker as my workaround but if you
want
to
troubleshoot this baby, I'm game.
Here we go:
1) Sony Vaio laptop
Vista Home Premium SP1
32 bit
Intel dual core
2gb ram
realtek hi def audio sound device and driver
WMP: Version 11.0.6001.7000
2) This is what I did to test mp3 and wma audio files in WMM:
-imported mp3 audio file onto MM timeline, will play in MM but no
sound,
published it to desktop using best setting. Played it on WMP11. no
sound
-imported wma audio file onto MM timeline, will play on MM timeline
with
sound, published it to desktop using Best setting, played great on
WMP11.
3)-I had performed a similar test last week with DVDmaker. same
results.
No
sound/music using .mp3 audio files.
4) I don't get any errors when playing these files using WMP11. the
published mp3 song will "play" but no sound.
5) I checked for WMP11 updates. WMP11 results says that I have all
available
updates.
