Re: Codecs/WAV/WMM

HI Zach,

I’m using wma files with MM and DVDmaker as my workaround but if you want to
troubleshoot this baby, I’m game.

Here we go:

1) Sony Vaio laptop
Vista Home Premium SP1
32 bit
Intel dual core
2gb ram
realtek hi def audio sound device and driver
WMP: Version 11.0.6001.7000

2) This is what I did to test mp3 and wma audio files in WMM:
-imported mp3 audio file onto MM timeline, will play in MM but no sound,
published it to desktop using best setting. Played it on WMP11. no sound
-imported wma audio file onto MM timeline, will play on MM timeline with
sound, published it to desktop using Best setting, played great on WMP11.

3)-I had performed a similar test last week with DVDmaker. same results. No
sound/music using .mp3 audio files.

4) I don’t get any errors when playing these files using WMP11. the
published mp3 song will “play” but no sound.

5) I checked for WMP11 updates. WMP11 results says that I have all available
updates.

6) “What are the results of WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information
menu
tool?” answer: Lots of info. What do you want to know?

7) “What third party players and/or codecs are installed?” answer: Other
3rd party players: GOM and WinDVD for Vaio. WinDVD is a limited version
allowing only the play of commercial DVD’s. GOM plays just about anything I
feed it.

If you need any more info, just ask.

Cheers…

Could you clarify your system details here? I am puzzled why I can do this
on Vista Ultimate SP1 32bit and you evident cannot. For right now let's
just care about Movie Maker to simplify things. Can you add an MP3 to the
timeline and then Publish the project as WMA? If not what precisely
happens?

What third party players and/or codecs are installed?
What are the results of WMP's Help:About:Technical Support Information menu
tool?

Zach,

I used WMP Rip feature to retrieve music from my CD's. I ripped using
.wav,
.wma and .mp3 audio formats. .wma audio files will work in WMM and WDVDM
but
not the .mp3 or .wav. I tested other songs from other CD's using WMP as
the
ripper. I also tested other .mp3 and .wav files that I had ripped years
ago
using audacity. .wma audio formats are the only formats that my WMM and
WDVDMaker will play. I've tested these formats in preview modes and also
burning to disc. .wma is the only audio file that works.

I've read other posters who claim the same issue.

In testing the three different audio formats, I used the exact settings in
WMM and WDVDM.

Got any ideas how to fix this?

I"m confused by your problem with .mp3 - that worked fine for me when I
tried just now. Do you have some specially crafted MP3 or some third
party
MP3 decoder that doesn't work right... ?

Rip a song from a good commercial music CD using WMPlayer. Be sure to
use
Rip
option tab and select Windows Media Audio. Wma formats should
definitely
work
in DVD maker and MM. I use .wav and .wma. For some reason .mp3 audio
formats
will not work in DVDM or MM even if I use WMP to rip the song with .mp3
format selected.

There's a few reasons why your .wav won't work with MM or DVDM, but
it's
time consuming and I won't be able to help you on that.

I don't know why .mp3 is not working with DVDM or MM. MS isn't telling.

Hope this helps you finish your project.
