Re: Cannot send email "Connection to server has failed"

Tech-Archive recommends: Repair Windows Errors & Optimize Windows Performance

1. Gmail doesn't use port 25 for sending. They require port 465.
The complete IMAP settings are here:
http://mail.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=77696

2. For the second error message (receiving), right-click on the [Gmail]
mail folder (in the left folder pane), select Synchronization Settings,
Don't Synchronize.

Here Gary - Let me know if this helps -- I now get two messages:

The connection to the server has failed. Subject 'HR Opportunities',
Account: 'imap.gmail.com', Server: 'smtp.gmail.com', Protocol: SMTP, Port:
25, Secure(SSL): Yes, Socket Error: 10060, Error Number: 0x800CCC0E

Header download for the '[Gmail]' folder did not complete. Could not select
'[Gmail]' on the IMAP server. You might try refreshing your folder list to
synchronize with the IMAP server. Account: 'imap.gmail.com', Server:
'imap.gmail.com', Protocol: IMAP, Server Response: 'Unknown Mailbox: [Gmail]
(Failure)', Port: 993, Secure(SSL): Yes, Error Number: 0x800CCCD2

Right-click on your error message, copy, then paste it into a reply here.
We can't do much troubleshooting without the complete error message.

If you don't see a wordy error message, look near the bottom right corner,
double-click on the yellow triangle with an exclamation mark.

I am using Gmail with Windows Mail and can receive messages. However, when I
compose messages in Windows Mail, they sit in the Out Box with the
"Connection to server has failed" message. This is a brand new set-up. How
do I adjust settings and to which setting?

Thanks for any help.
