Have you gone in your browser to http://gmail.com and verified that you
can log in with that username and password?
Other than that, I don't know what else you can do.
Perhaps open a new Gmail account.

According to that error message shown below, you have enabled an option
that Gmail does not support.
Go to Tools, Accounts, select that mail account, Properties, Servers.
Uncheck the box for "Log on using Secure Password Authentication."
This one is a real puzzler Gary, the poster is either skipping the
instructions or we are all missing something?
I posted the following, to which they replied, "done all that":

Ensure that you are using the corREcT password and username when entering it
in WM, remember that the password is case sensiTiVe
Do it at tools>accounts>select the account>properties>server tab
Never attempt to put the details into the security pop up, always click
cancel on that.
On the server tab ensure that "log on using secure password authentication"
is not checked.
Check all your settings against those provided here:

You might consider removing the account and starting again using the above
instructions?
