Re: Error:0x800CCC90, ErrorNumber:0x800CCC92

Gary
Yes, I got Tiscali to reset the password of my second account and that
sorted out the problem - clearly the problem was associated with Tiscali, not
WM or Live. I have however tried to set up my third account and that
account seems to wotk on web mail but pnly partially on WM. On WM I can send
but not receive the third account - so still trining to sort that one out.
One thought, the message above has just been received from Tiscali:
"Thank you for choosing Tiscali. We're pleased to tell you that free email
anti-spam and anti-virus has been automatically activated for your mailbox
free of charge.
Tiscali Secure Mail provides powerful email anti-spam and anti-virus filters
which block dangerous files and stop unsolicited mail from clogging up your
inbox.
Tiscali Secure Mail protects your mailbox whether you read your mail through
a web browser or download it to a mail client. "
I wonder if this "thoughtful" action is mucking things up? I am trying to
find out how to disable this "improvement" - so far without much success.

The error message remains the same ("ERR [AUTH] invalid user or password")?
If so, have you made sure you can access webmail with that same username and
password? (Try it at http://www.tiscali.co.uk/login/index.php )

Do you have another mail account you can try in WM? It sounds like a server
problem since you've done everything possible to resolve it from the client end.

Gary. Further to last message. I have now installed Windows Live e-mail.
Still no change!

Gary. I already have 2009 Internet Security. Taken your advice and
uninstalled Nortons completely and retried WM - no change!!! Now
re-installed Internet Security 2009. Where the heck do I go now?

Norton security products are among the top three troublemakers for
Windows Mail. Symptoms often don't surface until several months have
gone by, or until an update occurs.
First, be sure to disable its email scanning, for the reason explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

Several users here have reported that Symantec will give you a free
upgrade to Norton Antivirus 2009, which may cure the problem. If
interested, contact Symantec via online chat.

Disabling a Norton Antivirus 2008 program is often insufficient. Do a
trial uninstall, followed by using their debris removal tool:
http://service1.symantec.com/Support/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039

Instead of uninstalling your antivirus, another option is to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail, which is more resistant to the adverse effects of overly
intrusive antivirus products: http://download.live.com/wlmail

I get the following message when trying to send/receive a new additional
account just set up:
Account: 'pop.tiscali.co.uk (2)', Server: 'pop.tiscali.co.uk', Protocol:
POP3, Server Response: '-ERR [AUTH] invalid user or password', Port: 110,
Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90, Error Number: 0x800CCC92
I notice that antivirus conflicts have had the finger pointed at them - but
I have Nortons and set up other accounts with no problem. So why now? Tried
both with and without full address to no avail.
Any ideas would be gratefully received and applied!

That type of problem is usually caused by interference from a non-
compatible antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus must be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:

e-mail can be accessed from Cox.net but will not open to vista. I get a
"sign-in w/e-mail address and password" but it doesn't recognize me.
