First of all, not "everyone's" ability to open attachments is affected.
Mine isn't, and based on the incidence rate I'm seeing, less than 5%
of Windows Mail users are affected.
Microsoft stopped all development on Windows Mail as of about
July 2006, and advises anyone having trouble with it to upgrade to
Windows Live Mail. You can't expect an older program to stay forever
compatible with the newer programs being released, such as IE8.

How on earth can a company as big as MS release a product that screws up
everyone's ability at reading attachments in the only Mail server that MS

As reported by others, deleting the temporary files will only
give short-lived relief. The same problem returns after a restart
or two. The best solution for now is to uninstall IE8.

Suddenly, I am unable to open an attachment from within Winmail, I have
save it then open it. but the odd thing is, if the attachment is a photo,
it still shows at the end of the email?

I've not changed any mail settings, it's just happened!
