Windows Mail doesn't need message compaction, it only needs message
store (database) compaction. By default that is initiated every 100 runs.
You can change the compaction interval here:
Tools, Options, Advanced, Maintenance.
What it does, it removes blank spaces that have developed in the
database. Every time you delete an email, that slot in the database
is made into a blank. Periodic removal of the blanks will make database
accesses faster.

Gary, would you be good enough to explain how I can compress (or compact)
my
WM individual folders. I can't seem to find this function in Tools
anywhere.
Thanks............Paul C.

There is a lot of misinformation out there.
You did good by coming to a forum where real experts will answer
questions.
Compacting the message store is a necessary housekeeping function that
should be done periodically in Windows Mail.

Thank you Gary. Just got a little nervous when I read about it. I still
don't
like being asked a question like that just because I'm closing out a
program.
In this case it's very bothersome.

What makes you think Windows Mail stores information indefinitely?
It doesn't. Once you empty the Deleted Items folder, those messages
are just as gone as anything else you delete in Windows.

I've been reading the comments and questions about compacting
messages.
I try
to keep my computer very clean by deleting messages fequently.
What's alarming to hear if, I read it right, is that when I delete a
message, Winmail stores information about the messages I delete. Why
would it
do that? When I delete "anything" I expect it all to be deleted.
Everybody gets unwanted junk mail and I'm affraid to even think of
what
may
be lurking around in my computer because Windows Mail is storing bits
and
pieces of it.
Is there a way to change it? And does this go back to the old Outlook
Express days?
